Hurricane Florence Shifts South as Carolinas Hunker Down

As North Carolina residents began to feel the first modest effects of a weakened Hurricane Florence on Thursday, forecasters warned the powerful storm will bring seawater surging onto land and torrential downpours.

Hurricane conditions will likely hit the Carolina coast on Thursday night or early Friday. "We can not underestimate this storm. We just want prayers from everyone". "This is just a odd bird". Numerous flight cancellations and delays Thursday involved arrivals or departures at airports in Florence's path. The more it stalls, the more it rains.

At 5 p.m. Thursday, the center of Florence was 100 miles east-southeast of Wilmington, North Carolina, and 155 miles east of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. "We're still going to have a Category 4 storm surge", CNN meteorologist Chad Myers said.

Fears about Hurricane Florence spread south on Wednesday, with Georgia declaring a state of emergency after officials in the Carolinas urged people to evacuate the coast ahead of the storm's expected pounding winds and rain-driven floods. More flights were expected to be grounded and more airports were preparing to shut down operations as the storm moves inland. The Weather Channel reported the storm is likely to make landfall either tonight or Friday, after which it will stall over the Southeast, producing buckets of rain that could accumulate to unsafe amounts.

In the meantime, "treat the inland flooding just as seriously as you would the storm surge", said Clark.

British Airways will allow all customers who are now booked to travel to Antigua, the Dominican Republic, Providenciales, St. Kitts, St. Lucia or the Port of Spain the option to postpone their trips through Monday, September 17, TravelMole reported.

"Employees and local contractors have inspected equipment, reviewed procedures and assembled staffing plans to ensure around-the-clock support to respond to any potential impacts", the company said in a statement.

Florence is one of four named storms in the Atlantic.

Computer simulations - especially the often star-performing European model - push the storm further south, even into SC and Georgia. The hurricane center also adjusted its projected track, but kept it north of what most computer models were showing, to provide some continuity with past forecasts. "So many weird/outlandish solutions - but that's what happens when the steering currents collapse".

NHC Director Ken Graham said on Facebook the storm surges could push in as far as 2 miles (3 km). "The rainfall has been and continues to be a very substantial threat over the entire area". Anyone in an evacuation zone in the Carolinas and Virginia must leave NOW if they haven't yet.

Because of its enormous size and power, the storm has been a recent - if not frightening - muse for astronaut photography. Hurricane Helene is veering toward Europe.
