Hurricanes can be scary and risky, but one middle school in Sumter received an awe-inspiring glimpse of the monster storm that is on its way to SC.

"A life-threatening storm surge is highly likely along portions of the coastline of SC and North Carolina, and a Storm Surge Warning is in effect for a portion of this area", the National Hurricane Center said Wednesday.

Duke Energy told The Associated Press that damage from Hurricane Florence could cut off electricity to three-quarters of some 4 million customers in the Carolinas.

Officials in several states have declared states of emergency, including in the Carolinas, Georgia, Virginia and Maryland, where coastal areas are still recovering from summer storms.

Weather Underground meteorology director Jeff Masters said Florence eventually could strike as merely a Category 1 hurricane with winds less than 100 miles per hour, but that's still enough to cause at least $1 billion in damage.

Forecasters said wind speeds have dropped from a high of 140 miles per hour (225 kph) to 110 miles per hour (175 kph), reducing it from a Category 4 storm to a Category 2, and additional fluctuations and weakening were likely as it swirled toward land. The location was determined based on the track of Hurricane Florence and lodging availability, along with lessons learned from recent past difficulties returning home to an area impacted by widespread flooding.

Emergency preparations in the area included activating 2,800 National Guard troops in North Carolina, stockpiling food, setting up shelters, switching traffic patterns so that major roads led away from shore and securing 16 nuclear power reactors in the three-state region.

Northeast Ohio native Lynn Morgan has lived in Charleston, South Carolina for the past five years. "It's going to happen".

Make-up days will be designated at a later time, according to school officials.

"I've been watching the weather and they've been saying about the evacuation and she's like family and I didn't want her stuck in that", said Morton.

"We normally take pets for one floor but during the hurricane we make exceptions", said Maureen McGuire, director of sales at Wyndham Garden Jacksonville near Interstate 95 and J. Turner Butler Boulevard. "But no matter how bad it's going to be, it will pass and our job will be to rebuild this community together, and that's what we're going to do".

"Missionaries in the path of Hurricane Florence are taking necessary precautions to remain safe as the storm prepares to make landfall".

The cone of probability for Hurricane Florence as of 11:00 p.m. EDT, Sept. 12, 2018. "People are taking down awnings and U-Haul trucks have come in and take the entire contents of stores".
