The "Now Network's" latest ambitious promise is the commercial release of the first 5G smartphone in the United States, vaguely scheduled for sometime during "the first half" of next year.

Even though the race to 5G has been a global event, there is still competition between USA carriers to be the first.

"Building on LG's legacy of innovation, our teams are enthusiastic about partnering with Sprint's 5G experts to bring next-generation mobile to market in the USA, while continuing to evolve LG's best-in-class design elements for Sprint customers." said William Cho, LG Electronics North America President and CEO.

The race to launch 5G smartphone is on. All four major USA carriers have advanced 5G roadmaps, but initial deployments will be restricted to Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) broadband in major cities until the first 5G smartphones arrive next year.

Of course, the Verizon-exclusive Moto Z3 is not technically a 5G-enabled product, needing a separate accessory that's obviously not yet ready for primetime to achieve the mobile network speeds of tomorrow.

With 5G, you can expect faster downloads, and reduced lag while video chatting and playing multiplayer games.

It'll be interesting to see how quickly hardware brands upgrade their phones to support the new network. Notably, Qualcomm in a release earlier this year had confirmed that it was working with several original equipment manufacturers including LG to launch 5G smartphones next year. One big difference is that while Verizon only has three markets announced, Sprint says that it will have 5G available in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, New York City, Phoenix and Washington, D.C.
