A gunman opened fire in Walmart, injuring five people after he got into an argument with a customer in the checkout line.

Police are tackling an active shooter at a branch of Walmart in Cheltenham Township, in the USA state of Pennsylvania.

Responding officers captured the suspects and a gun was also recovered. The officers, suspect and female passenger were in stable condition, he said.

At least two people are believed to have been shot.

Both suspects were taken into custody and transported to the hospital for unknown injuries.

Police sources say the suspects are brother and sister.

Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small praised the officers.

The gunman and a woman then fled in a vehicle, but crashed into the back of a police auto, injuring two officers.

He said: "They made this arrest initially thinking they were arresting somebody for trying to leave the scene of an auto accident and then realising it's a much more serious crime".

Police have not described the nature of the argument at the checkout and it is not clear if any party to the dispute was injured.

She said she helped a man who had been shot in the leg make a tourniquet out of his shirt to try to stop the bleeding.

All victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the gunfire reported just after 6 p.m. Tuesday in the crowded store at the Cedarbrook Plaza Shopping Center, Cheltenham Township Chief of Police John Frye said.
