Hospitals were awarded Honor Roll points if they ranked in one or more of the 16 specialties that U.S. News evaluates - more points for higher rankings - and if they were rated "high performing" in one or more of the nine procedures and conditions.

The best children's hospital in the country was Boston Children's Hospital, with Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia next in line. They finished in the same order past year. The rankings are produced by U.S. News with RTI International, Research Triangle Park, N.C.

Not listed in the ranking this year was McLaren Greater Lansing Hospital, which was ranked last year. "We also remain the No. 1 hospital in the Sacramento region".

The hospital also ranked as best in the state in treating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and is the second-best for conducting colon and lung cancer surgeries, hip and knee replacements, and treating patients who suffer heart failure, according to U.S. News.

This year, a total of 158 hospitals were nationally ranked in at least one specialty. Those specialties include 28th in cancer, 26th in cardiology and heart surgery, 16th in ear, nose and throat and 18th in neurology and neurosurgery.

U.S. News compared more 4,500 medical centers nationwide in 25 specialties, procedures and conditions. The Mayo Clinic in Minnesota held on to the top spot for the third year in a row, while Cleveland Clinic ranked No. 2.

Fourteen different specialties at the Clinic earned national rankings report. No Michigan hospitals were ranked in the top five.
