The first contestant to be announced for this year's series of Strictly Come Dancing is Katie Piper. The mother of two said: "I feel so privileged and excited to be part of my favourite show on TV".

Katie is a best-selling global author, inspirational speaker, TV presenter and charity campaigner.

Danny said: "Having spent the last few months on two wheels motorcycling around South America in pink leathers, I'm absolutely delighted to be getting back on two feet and into something more comfortable like glittery spandex".

She said she would like to be partnered with professional dancer Giovanni Pernice, but she is concerned that she has no natural rhythm.

The news was revealed this morning (13 August) on BBC Breakfast before the Strictly Twitter account announced it on social media.

Piper, who was the victim of an acid attack in 2008 which left her partially blind and with severe scarring, is also an author and works to support other acid attack survivors through the Katie Piper Foundation.

The identity of the remaining contestants on this year's series of the dancing competition will be revealed over the coming days.

Who else is on the line up?

Steps singer Faye Tozer and actor Danny John-Jules join Katie Piper on this year's cast.

Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly will return to hosting duties with Shirley Ballas heading up the panel of judges, which also includes Bruno Tonioli, Darcey Bussell and Craig Revel Horwood.

The new series will kick off with a launch show on BBC One in September, with the full series returning later on in the autumn.
