Manchester United hopeful on David De Gea extension

As things stand, De Gea's current contract runs until 2019 but there is an option to extend that by a further year until 2020.

Manchester United superstar David de Gea is reportedly on the verge of signing a new lucrative deal with the Old Trafford club, cementing his place as the highest-paid goalkeeper in the Premier League.

With Thibaut Courtois having joined Real Madrid, United believe that an obstacle has been removed in their quest to persuade De Gea to stay at the club and sign a new deal that will raise his earnings above £200,000 a week.

The 27-year-old's future has been repeatedly questioned since he came close to joining Real Madrid three years ago and United are desperate to keep hold of the Spain global.

De Gea would also be entitled to a testimonial come the 2021/22 season as he would have been at the club for 10 years. But there is an acceptance that Real Madrid's investment in the Belgian, who is 18 months younger than De Gea, should help smooth the process.

However, De Gea was not as convincing for Spain at the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation and he came in for criticism after making an error which allowed Cristiano Ronaldo to score for Portugal in a 3-3 draw in their first game of the tournament.

United kicked off their new Premier League campaign with a 2-1 win over Leicester on Friday night.
