A 512 GB model, for $1,259, will be available on AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, U.S. Cellular and Samsung.com.

"Samsung will be mindful to criticism that the S9 offered iterative improvements to the S8", commented Shaun Collins, chief executive of the CCS Insight consultancy.

Samsung is counting on its latest device to lead the charge during the crucial holiday season and revitalize a mobile division where profits nearly halved last quarter.

Unlike any other previous Note iteration, this year's S Pen is powered by a Bluetooth Low Energy module and a supercapacitor. Samsung said more details would come later this year.

The company's product event follows a quarter of disappointing sales of Samsung's Galaxy S9.

On Thursday morning, Samsung took to the stage at the Barclays Center in New York City to officially announce the Galaxy Note 9.

The Samsung Galaxy Note will be available from 24 August in Midnight Black, Lavender Purple, Metallic Copper with matching S Pen, and Ocean Blue with a Yellow S Pen. You'll be able to use the pen as a presentation clicker, long-press to launch an app of your choice, and set specific actions inside each app.

Mr Jeronimo was more positive about the impact this would have. But that wonderful hardware comes at an incredibly steep price: $999 for the base model with 128GB of storage and 6GB of RAM, or a whopping $1,249 for the 512GB/8GB model.

So you won't get asked to hand over the Note 9 before boarding an airplane?

While the big-screened smartphone (6.4in, to be precise) looks near identical to its Note 8 predecessor with its edge-to-edge display and glossy IP68-certified chassis, Samsung is touting a number of upgrades.

The story is no different in India where Samsung bounced back in the second quarter with 29 per cent market share, toppling its Chinese rival Xiaomi which garnered a close 28 per cent, says Hong Kong-based Counterpoint Research.

This is likely to appeal to hardcore gamers and other power users if they can justify the cost.

Samsung also provided a brief first look at the forthcoming Galaxy Home smart speaker.

It did reveal the speaker has eight microphones that will delivery "far-field voice recognition" for its Bixby.

Spotify is available as both a free and paid service, though the free version contains visual and audible advertising throughout. Tizen works on both Android and iOS, so users will not be limited by the operating system of their smartphone.

In addition to the expected smart watch features such as reminders, messages and scheduling, the Galaxy Watch is pushing heavily into the fitness and wellness space, with a particular focus on the latter.

It also features stress-tracking software and the ability to connect to mobile networks independently. Hell, it may even make a nice centrepiece.
