Magic Leap One's 'Creator' edition headset debuts today for $2300

Also, the Magic Leap Creator Portal has been provided to help developers build new experiences for the mixed-reality offering ahead of its debut for the masses.

Magic Leap, the company that has been promising the best in augmented reality for the past four years, has finally released the Magic Leap One to developers. The advanced glasses that were unveiled in December a year ago to offer a mix of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) experience out-of-the-box are initially available in limited quantities to developers in the US. The Lightwear features tracking cameras and a "photonics chip" lens that overlays images over the real world. The GPU is an Nvidia Pascal with 256 CUDA cores, and the Lightpack has 8GB of RAM with 128GB of storage capacity and a lithium-ion battery, though a full charge only powers three hours of continuous use. Right now, however, it's aimed at app developers, who Magic Leap hopes will want to create their own apps for the Magic Leap World store.

Tónandi is a collaboration between Icelandic avant-rock band Sigur Rós and Magic Leap Studios to create an audio-visual experience that inserts pulsing manifestations into the user's vision.

There sure is much hype around the launch of the Magic Leap, Content creator edition. It is a hyperrealistic action game where the player is pitted against evil robots intent on invading the living room. Twilio provides the connection services for the Social app. The device will cost $2,295, with an optional Professional Developer Package available for $495.

That's because Magic Leap will sell prescription lenses for an additional fee, but CNet says users with "really bad" eyesight may want to opt for contact lenses instead. Magic Leap is limiting the release to selected cities in the U.S. to start, as each purchase comes with a free technician visit to help users fit and set up the device.

The timing of Gattis departure becomes even more interesting if the Magic Leap One Creator's Edition is indeed being launched today, as it means that the product is being launched with no one directly in control of marketing, which is arguably one of the most critical components of a product launch.
