Tlaib - who was once kicked out of a luncheon for heckling Trump - won her primary on Tuesday and could become the United States first Muslim congresswoman.

The Michigan governorship is a top target for the Democratic Party, which is eager to make gains in the Midwest, where Republicans have dominated state governments and which helped President Donald Trump take the White House in 2016.

She earned the nomination by defeating Shri Thanedar, a chemical-testing businessman, and Abdul El-Sayed, an ex-Detroit health director who was vying to become the country's first Muslim governor. She was considered the favorite due to her political experience and broad support from organized labor and other key groups.

Thanedar, who spent more than $11 million of his own money on the race, surged in public polls as El-Sayed struggled to raise money and Whitmer replaced her campaign manager.

"Americans have the sticker shock of health care as it is", said Ms. Ocasio-Cortez, who won her Democratic primary in NY.

Michigan Democratic congressional candidate Rashida Tlaib on Thursday said she is not fully sold on the predictions of a "blue wave" during the upcoming midterm elections.

"I don't know exactly what's going to happen but I know in [Michigan's] 13th Congressional District, the families I talk to, it was always around issues, not different identifiers, not about specific things that are happening right now in D.C.", she said. Whitmer also endorsed a $15 minimum wage, but focused her campaign on "fixing the damn roads", a memorable promise to fix the state's infrastructure. Whether it's fixing Michigan's roads and bridges, fighting for universal preschool and debt-free community college, or cleaning up Michigan's drinking water, Gretchen will get it done.
