The 26-year-old only had a year left on his deal and has been absent from training this week as he looked to push through a move before the transfer window ended for the Blues on Thursday.

Chelsea have made Kepa their number one target to replace Thibaut Courtois.

Chelsea have confirmed they have reached an agreement with Real Madrid for the transfer of Thibaut Courtois.

Last season, Madrid reportedly also tried to sign Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, who now is expected to join Chelsea as Courtois' replacement.

The Belgian is set to be involved in an interesting fight for the gloves with Keylor Navas, Kiko Casilla, Andriy Lunin and Luca Zidane, and read a short speech in Spanish before addressing the media.

"It's a very important decision for me, for my career, and also for my personal life", said the goalkeeper.

Chelsea Director Marina Granovskaia added: "Kepa is a talent we have admired for a long time and we are extremely excited about his arrival".

"But when I learned of the concrete interest from Madrid, I had no doubts and I wanted to join the best club in the world".

Real Madrid are believed to be the front-runners to sign the shot-stopper this summer, as some of the goalkeeper's family are already living in the Spanish capital.

"It is an accumulation of things really and I am delighted that the club has signed me".

Mateo Kovacic has revealed how he sought the advice of his Croatian and Real Madrid team-mate, Luka Modric, before sealing a loan move to Chelsea for the upcoming season.

Chelsea coach Maurizio Sarri praised Arrizabalaga on Tuesday night.
