Mike Pence Unveils Plans For New Space Force Military Branch By 2020

"There will be no Millennium Falcon, no Jedis or Wookiees we are sad to report", the Fox News host said. Currently, a three-star Space Command falls under the Air Force, headquartered at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado responsible for 30,000 personnel worldwide.

In an address at the Pentagon ahead of the Defense Department's rollout of a report to Congress on the feasibility of a space force, Vice President Mike Pence announced plans to invest additional billions of dollars and to stand up a dedicated USA combatant command for space, as well as an elite Space Operations Command, akin to the military's U.S.

So, before we can "have the Space Force", as Trump put it, the White House will have to convince lawmakers that the USA really needs it.

Mr Trump "knows that space is integral to our American way of life and economic prosperity and is a vital domain for national defence" while, under his direction, the United States is "reclaiming its heritage as the world's greatest space-faring nation", the White House said.

"As their actions make clear, our advisories have transformed space into a war fighting domain already and the Untied States will not shrink from this challenge".

In the meantime, White House officials have been working with national security leaders to aggressively move ahead without Congress.

The US Space Force will act as a sixth branch of the US military.

The vice president came to the Pentagon to release a report that Congress ordered in last year's defense policy bill laying out options to create a separate service for space. "However, going forward there probably will need to be an increase in resources to buy improved capabilities and more warfighters as the Space Force matures". Pence said the administration will create a single civilian position reporting to the secretary of defense to oversee the growth and expansion of the new branch.

It includes the establishment of a U.S. Space Command, a new combatant command focused on space as a warfighting domain.

But 56 years later, space plays a vital role in just about every aspect of modern warfare, with many military technologies reliant on a network of sensors and satellites floating in orbit.

"Initially the Department will recommend that the Air Force Space Command commander be dual-hatted as commander of the unified command", the report said. In 2007, China fired a missile to destroy an aged weather satellite, demonstrating in a dramatic fashion its ability to deploy anti-satellite weapons.

Pence cited adversaries' advancements in developing hypersonic missiles, which can travel up to five miles per second and evade missile warning systems.

To establish the sixth branch, the White House would need the approval of Congress. "But history proves that peace only comes through strength", he added.

"There's not a mission today that we do in the military that doesn't in some way depend upon space", Air Force Sec.

"The only person that I've heard say this is a fantastic idea is the commander in chief, the president of the United States", Kelly said.
