Sources close to the negotiations confirmed on Thursday that officials from United contacted Atletico this week to discuss a deal for Godin, who was entering the final year of his contract. That much we do know.

Having been linked with moves for Harry Maguire, Toby Alderweireld, Jerome Boateng and Yerry Mina this summer, United suddenly began showing an interest in Chelsea's Kurt Zouma late on Wednesday night.

Jose Mourinho is hellbent on snapping up a new defender ahead of today's 5 pm transfer deadline.

Manchester United have offered to trigger Diego Godin's £18m release clause and pay him £8.1m-per-season but the defender is set to stay at Atletico Madrid, according to ESPN.

Godin, 32, has been one of the world's most consistent defenders over the past five years.

Manchester United have had a frustrating transfer window so far, having been unable to secure a number of priority targets.

The 32-year-old has plied his trade in the Spanish capital since 2010 following a switch from Villarreal.

Godin in action for Atletico Madrid. He has also racked up 122 caps for Uruguay and is Oscar Tabarez's current captain.

"I'm not confident, I'm not confident and the market closes today so is time at least for me to stop thinking about the market because the market will be closed", he told reporters when asked about his transfer options.

A leader and tough uncompromising defender, he is a player Mourinho has coveted for some time and is a key component to Atletico where he has a strong relationship with coach Simeone and that relationship has led to a deadline day rejection.

Signing Godin at this late stage would be incredible business by United, but it is also highly hard.
