The shallow 6.9-magnitude quake sparked terror among tourists and locals alike, coming just a week after another deadly tremor surged through Lombok, killing at least 17 people.

Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman for Indonesia's disaster mitigation agency, said most of the damaged buildings in the city were built with substandard construction materials.

Some areas still hadn't been reached 24 hours after the quake because of collapsed bridges, blocked and ruptured roads and the loss of power and communications.

Nugroho said more than 20,000 people had been displaced.

The quake, which struck at a depth of 15 km off the north coast of Lombok, comes a week after a 6.4 magnitude quake killed 14 people on the island and prompted a large-scale evacuation of a volcano popular with hikers.

The tremor was so powerful it was felt on the neighbouring island of Bali where, according to BNPB, two people died.

Thousands of holidaymakers have been left stranded in the region after the powerful quake ripped through Lombok yesterday.

The main hospital in the town of Tanjung in the north was severely damaged, so staff set up about 30 beds in the shade of trees and in a tent on a field to tend to the injured.

The north of Lombok has been devastated by the magnitude 7.0 quake that struck on Sunday night injuring more than 230 and destroying thousands of buildings. On top of it, this natural disaster triggered a tsunami warning.

As we got to the hotel - people were running out.

The white-robed Islamic leader was preaching on Sunday night at a mosque in Denpasar on the holiday island of Bali when the shallow 6.9-magnitude quake struck.

"The police officers there were kind", he said, though the airport was chaotic with a lot of people.

The Minister, who is attending a security conference in Mataram, Lombok, described the situation in an update on Monday.

The senior MP was dining at a restaurant on the 12th floor of a hotel when the magnitude-7 quake struck. "We were knocked certainly to the floor", he told Australian radio.

The Garuda Indonesia airline said it was adding extra flights from Lombok to help tourists leave.

"So we went to the streets to see if any of the locals could give us more insight and they told us to run to the hills as fast as possible because there was a tsunami on its way".

"Bali. Trembling. So long", Teigen tweeted Sunday.

Reps for John confirmed the family were okay, and Chrissy, who is pretty active on social media, got social media in a tizz when she began to live tweet her experience, writing there were 'so many aftershocks'.
