While Leonard rarely speaks publicly on his intentions, the belief among most pundits is that he wants to join the Los Angeles Lakers.

Kawhi Leonard's first public statement since being part of a blockbuster National Basketball Association trade last month is full of thanks but short on explanations.

Gay says what separates the Spurs from other organizations and executives - including the subject to his subtext, Raptors president Masai Ujiri - was demonstrated in the circumstances that brought DeRozan to San Antonio.

He was traded to the Raptors in July, along with Danny Green, in exchange for DeMar DeRozan, Jakob Poeltl and a protected 2019 first-round pick.

"I have been going back and forth the last few weeks trying to figure out the right things to say, and it comes down to two simple words: THANK YOU!"

On Thursday, Leonard broke his silence via a release and offered many thanks to the Spurs organization, his teammates, the fans, and Gregg Popovich for everything over the past seven seasons.

The 2018-2019 regular season for the National Basketball Association will tip off October 16, with the Spurs regular season schedule due out this Friday. That doesn't happen much in the National Basketball Association, to be honest with you.

Popovich and Leonard appeared to have a fractured relationship at times during Leonard's final year in San Antonio, when the disgruntled forward suited up for just nine games due to injury.

THANK YOU to the fans! "I'll never forget what we have shared and accomplished together", Leonard wrote.

While I'm looking forward to the next chapter in my career, I'll always remember the city and the people of San Antonio!
