Elliott earns first Cup victory; runs out of fuel at finish

Chase Elliott said he wishes he could get a ride for that race - he has never competed in a NASCAR national series race against his father - but the Hendrick Motorsports driver has no current plans.

Truex was bidding to become the first Cup driver to win three straight road races since Tony Stewart accomplished the feat just over a decade ago (2004-05). But on the final lap, he lost control briefly, allowing Truex to close in on his bumper.

Eight times he had finished second during his Cup career.

Elliott led Truex by 1.1 seconds with 19 laps left, Jones was third over 10 seconds behind and Busch 18 seconds back in eighth in what turned into a two-car struggle.

The top 10 in stage two were #9, Chase Elliott, #18 Kyle Busch, #11 Denny Hamlin, #20 Erik Jones, #78 Martin Truex Jr, #1 Jamie McMurray, #4 Kevin Harvick, #42 Kyle Larson, #12 Ryan Blaney, #19 Daniel Suarez rounded out the top 10 in stage two.

Gordon, with nine career road course victories, won six straight races from 1997-2000.

Watkins Glen is one of the few tracks where cars can race in the rain, and the drivers have already had to deal with some wet conditions during practice sessions.

Moments later, Joey Logano slid off course on lap two and dropped to the rear of the field, then headed to the garage with a broken radiator, his day done. Busch pitted the next time around to stay on the same strategy, but Truex stayed out to win his seventh stage of the season. "I love coming to these road courses". His streak included three wins each at Watkins Glen and Sonoma.

While you're free to revel in Elliott's first win and buy as much merchandise as your heart desires it's important that you don't get carried away and think that NASCAR is somehow "saved" or that 10 years of television audience declines are suddently going to be reversed because the 22-year-old won a race on a Sunday in August.

Not so fast, says Cup points leader Kyle Busch, who said he would keep Bell right where he is for the time being if he were the owner of the team. Busch will now start 36th and Menard will start last in the 37-car field after each failed inspection once. 20 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing. #18 Kyle Busch had taken the lead prior to the Almirola incident.
