Somewhat of a Slavic citizenship collector, the star of action movies Under Siege, Hard to Kill, and Out for Justice was also granted Serbian citizenship in 2016, after offering to open an Aikido school in the capital city.

The unpaid position for the B-movie star, who has been a Russian citizen since 2016, is similar to that of a UN Goodwill Ambassador.

A statement issued by Russia's Foreign Ministry announced: "Steven Seagal was appointed as the Russian Foreign Ministry's special representative for Russian-US humanitarian ties".

As The Guardian noted in November 2016, Putin personally handed Seagal his Russian passport, congratulated the actor, and hailed the manouver as the beginning of normalization of the relations between Russia and the United States.

Seagal, who sometimes appears on Russian state TV to talk about his views and career, was cited by Kremlin-backed TV station RT as welcoming the appointment.

"I've always tried to do everything possible to help Russian-American relations to improve". "I have worked tirelessly in this direction for many years unofficially and I am now very grateful for the opportunity to do the same thing officially".

CNN has reached out Seagal's spokesperson for comment.

Hollywood actor Steven Seagal is now in charge of deepening art, cultural, and youth ties between the two countries.

In his first big role in the 1988 movie Above the Law, he played a former Central Intelligence Agency agent, and in one of his latest films, Mercenary: Absolution, he played a contract killer.

According to the same outlet, the actor is known to be a long-time supporter of Russian Federation, and he has visited the country on numerous ocassions.

Seagal, like Putin, is an accomplished martial artist.

Steven Seagal has been made a special Russia-US envoy.

He said he had called Putin "one of the world's great leaders"; he described the Russian president as a personal friend and expressed a desire to improve relations between the USA and Russia. In 2013, Putin inclined Seagal to be the country's honorary consul in Arizona and California.
