Rick Gates Forced Into Admitting Extramarital Affair by Paul Manafort’s Lawyer

Gates tried to appear remorseful as he explained to the jury that he fabricated the expenses because he was "living outside his means".

"Have they presented you with so many lies that you can't remember?"

Gates was visibly nervous during Downing's relentless questioning. "Mr. Manafort had the same path".

Gates admitted to having an apartment in London to facilitate an extramarital affair, but denied that he used funds embezzled from Manafort for the tryst.

After setting up the relationship with a Cypriot bank, the name of a shell company was then chosen by Dr. K or another attorney at his firm, Gates said.

He also acknowledged writing a fraudulent letter to prospective investors for a movie project involving Steve Brown, a business associate. He also committed credit card and mortgage fraud, falsified a letter for a colleague involved in an investment deal and made false statements in a deposition at Manafort's direction. "Brown as a favor?" "I admit to that".

Manafort's trial is the first on charges brought by Mueller's office.

"Did you submit personal expenses to the inaugural committee?"

Gates pleaded guilty to lying to investigators and conspiring to defraud the United States. This kept the scheme mostly hidden from accountants and bookkeepers-though immunized witness Cynthia Laporta earlier testified that she had her doubts about the veracity of Manafort's and Gates's representations surrounding the loans. I just saw this.

The prosecution produced an undated email exchange between Mr Manafort and Mr Gates which outlines the amount of tax the campaign chief might have to pay.

When they wired the money from Cyprus to the United States, Gates said, Manafort would list it as a "loan" to reduce his taxable income.

When Downing went to go ask another question, Andres objected. "Yes, we did", he replied.

Gates testified Tuesday that Manafort's business dried up when the pro-Russia political party they were working for in Ukraine lost power in 2014.

Prosecutors showed contracts laying out that Manafort would be paid $4 million a year in quarterly installments of $1 million, all channeled through Cyprus.

On Tuesday, Gates did connect one part of the bank fraud charges against Manafort to his role in the Trump campaign.

Paul Manafort (L), former campaign chairman for U.S. President Donald Trump, in Washington, DC, U.S., December 11, 2017, and Rick Gates, former campaign aide to Trump, in Washington, U.S., December 11, 2017 are pictured in this combination photograph.

Downing asked Gates if he's returned any of the money he stole from Manafort or his entities.
