The American Airlines flight, AA 1942, landed at LaGuardia Airport in NY around 10:45 p.m. Monday. The gruesome discovery wasn't made until early on Tuesday morning, when the out-of-service jet was parked inside an airport hangar, according to law enforcement officials.

The plane was in a hangar and had arrived in NY from Charlotte, North Carolina, on Monday night. Sources told NBC New York that the fetus appears to have been 5 to 6 months old.

The City Medical Examiner is working on determining how the fetus died.

"We're investigating what we believe to be a human fetus found deceased on an airplane. We will release determination when investigation is complete".

The plane was later pictured being moved to a hanger as law enforcement began investigating the find.

The Queens County District Attorney is looking into the matter.

Just before 9 a.m., the airport tweeted about possible delays over the incident. Officials said a short time later that the flight was delayed until 4 p.m.
