A small plane crashed in the parking lot of a strip mall outside of Anaheim, California, on Sunday (Aug 5), killing all five people on board, the authorities said.

All of the victims, none of whom were immediately identified, were aboard the twin-engine Cessna when it went down at about 12:30 p.m. (3:30 p.m. ET) as it was headed for an emergency landing at John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will each investigate. East Bay woman ID'd as one of Southern California plane crash victimsGhanadan was a realtor at Pacific Union in Danville.

There were no reported injuries on the ground, said Capt. Steve Concialdi of Orange County Fire.

"We looked up to see the plane falling nose first", she told the Times.

The location of the crash is between the cities of Santa Ana and Costa Mesa, about 40 minutes south of Los Angeles.

The crash came about a year after a twin-engine airplane burst into flames as it crash-landed on the 405 Freeway just a few miles away after taking off from John Wayne Airport.

The parking lot is shared by Staples, a CVS drug store, a Michaels' decorations store, and a Wells Fargo Bank branch. All of the wreckage appeared to be contained within the parking lot and video broadcast by NBC news showed the aircraft plunging straight into the lot.
