Among those caught up in the incident was 91-year-old Don Kohles, who was walking into the supermarket when he saw "two police cars coming like a bat out of hell" and the man crashed into the pole.

He could hear others around him sobbing as the man ran towards the back of the store and yelled at people, but Mr Kohles said he did not hear any more gunshots.

Footage from the scene showed people escaping out a store window and door. An LAPD source said she was the store manager.

Officers tracked the auto using a stolen-vehicle tracking system and tried to stop the man in Hollywood, but he refused to pull over. In fact, he only entered the store because he was fleeing the store in hot pursuit.

Atkins, who has two daughters, wound up shooting his girlfriend as well before forcing her into a vehicle and kidnapping her, cops said.

The Los Angeles Police Department tweeted there was an "active incident" at a Trader Joe's in the Silver Lake area.

The violence began when Atkins shot his 76-year-old grandmother several times at their South Los Angeles home after she complained about his having too many television sets on, said a cousin, Charlene Egland.

It was not immediately clear whether the suspect shot the woman or if she was killed in the crossfire of the gun battle with police as the man fled into the market. Relatives said the shooter may have been upset because his 78-year-old grandmother didn't want his girlfriend around the house.

"I was walking in when a vehicle crashed running from the police crashed into street lamp in front of the entrance".

Police say a gunman who took hostages inside a Los Angeles supermarket has been booked on suspicion of murder. A short time later, a woman was seen being dragged away from the store's entryway and then being treated by paramedics.

A woman inside the store was shot but able to get out, NBC Los Angeles reported, saying there may be dozens of people still inside the store in safe locations.

The suspect had a pistol in his hand and "just started opening fire on the police behind him", Devin Field said. For hours, the incident at a Trader Joe's in Silver Lake paralyzed part of the city and even captured the attention of President Trump.

Madison raised Atkins from the age of 7 and he had never been violent toward her but recently had seemed upset and distant, Egland said.

Police at the scene said a number of people inside the store were held against their will for three hours.

During the high-speed pursuit, Atkins allegedly fired at officers, shattering the rear window of the auto he was driving, police said.

The dramatic pursuit ended when the driver crashed his Toyota, returning fire with officers before rushing inside the Trader Joe's.

A woman at a supermarket across the street said people inside heard the gunfire and that everyone dived to the floor.
