One thing was immediately clear about Shazam! during the film's Comic-Con panel: this is a new kind of DC movie. Overall, the film looks like it's following up on the promise to be the "Big" of superhero movies, as teased by star Zachary Levi some time ago.

At San Diego Comic-Con, the two-hour Warner Bros. presentation included the Shazam teaser trailer (which was a surprise, given that the main expectation was for footage at this date).

The movie is directed by David S. Sandberg who made Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation but rather than dark horror the footage made Shazam! look like a really light, fun, amusing and family friendly comicbook movie. The Big Red Cheese is fun and lively, and promises to bring a unique dynamic to the DC Extended Universe. The trailer has Baston/Shazam actually enjoying his powers and doing fun stuff with it. Levi points out that it's not often that you see hero discovering his powers and actually having fun with it.

"Shazam!" follows Asher Angel's character, Billy Batson, a regular teenager who is bestowed with a superpower when a powerful wizard gives him the ability to transform into a Superman-esque adult superhero with a bolt of lightning emblazoned across his chest when he shouts the word "Shazam". "This is 14-year-old me wanting to put on spandex and a cape and fly around.I get to bring to life a character that I know is near and dear to a lot of people".

Jack Dylan Grazer also stars as Billy's best friend Freddy Freeman, with Djimon Hounsou as the title Wizard, and Mark Strong's villainous Dr. Thaddeus Sivana. Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision?

Shazam! hits theaters April 5, 2019. Can he skip his social studies test? But he'll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).
