Recent reports from THR indicate that Jennifer Connelly, who appeared recently in Kosinki's Only the fearless, is in early talks to star as the female lead, a single mother who runs a local bar near the Navy base.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, if the deal goes through, Connelly, 47, will play a single mother who runs a local bar near the Navy base where Cruise's flight instructor Pete "Maverick" Mitchell works.

The 31-year-old actor will play the son of Maverick's former wingman, Goose, who was killed-off in the 1986 original.

Joseph Kosinski will direct the film from a script by Peter Craig, Justin Marks and Eric Warren Singer.

Jennifer Connelly is reportedly joining the cast of "Top Gun: Maverick". Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the first film with the late Don Simpson, will produce with Cruise and Skydance CEO David Ellison.

Just given the description of the character and her being the female lead, one has to assume that she will probably be the love interest for Tom Cruise's Maverick.

The original Top Gun was directed by Tony Scott and also starred Kelly McGillis, Anthony Edwards and Tom Skerritt.

Production begins in September, with a July 12th, 2019 release date set.
