We won't have long to find out; the movie is due in theaters in a little over a year.

The studio made the announcement on Wednesday afternoon ahead of the start of Comic-Con.

Will we see Joker material at Warner Bros.' Comic-Con panel this Saturday?

Phillips directs from a screenplay he co-wrote with Scott Silver (The Fighter). Martin Scorsese was once even attached to produce, and Warner Bros. was eyeing his frequent collaborator Leonardo DiCaprio for the role. Starring Joaquin Phoenix, the film is directed by Todd Philips.

Phoenix talked about the latest reinvention of the Clown Prince of Crime in a recent interview with Collider.

Please, try to be shocked: it's called Joker. Probably because Jared Leto is still playing The Joker in the DCEU.

That date adds to an already crowded month, which also promises Ang Lee's Will Smith starrer Gemini Man; Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's Disney ride movie Jungle Cruise; John Crowley's adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Goldfinch; and Joe Wright's adaptation of The Woman in the Window. I'm still not sure how Phoenix fits with Phillips; I can't conceive of them making any movie together, much less a movie about the freaking Joker, but if it really is a character study about a insane criminal, then Phoenix is smart casting.
