Uber launches 'Spotlight' feature to flag drivers

In a crowded situation, such as after a sporting event or concert with dozens of smartphones held aloft, Spotlight will allow riders to use Uber's app to light up their phone screens with a specific color, giving drivers a clearer sense of which levitating smartphone to look for. Schedule a ride in advance and it will get to you on time.

Firstly, to make it easier for the driver to spot you, Uber is launching a new tool called Spotlight.

Uber is also adding guaranteed pick ups. Drivers will naturally be notified of whatever color you choose.

Chris Godbey, executive director of the Young Republicans National Federation, and his peers said they were abruptly told to exit an Uber driver's vehicle over the weekend after an event near Raleigh, North Carolina. Our on-time guarantee means your scheduled ride will arrive during the time period you select, or we'll give you Uber credit towards your next ride. "Then he quickly turned off and stopped the auto and said, 'your ride has been terminated and you've reached your destination - and I have the right to deny you service".

The feature builds on another feature Uber rolled out a year ago, called Beacon. You could tell them what you're wearing or where exactly you're standing. While it's already possible for drivers and passengers to communicate via text or phone, Uber has made the entire process more convenient by enabling communication within the app itself.

'Sometimes you want to give your driver a little extra detail ahead of the pickup, ' Yu wrote in the blog post.

Riders can send messages to their driver within the app, and send ready-to-go messages like "be right there" with one tap. Pickup messages are read aloud to drivers and they can simply tap to respond.
