"The Russian state has never interfered and is not going to interfere in internal American affairs", Putin said during a news conference in Helsinki following a one-on-one meeting with President Trump.

Taking an aim at his predecessor Barack Obama, the US President tweeted: "President Obama thought that Crooked Hillary was going to win the election, so when he was informed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation about Russian Meddling, he said it couldn't happen, was no big deal, and did NOTHING about it".

"President Trump mentioned the so-called interference of Russian Federation in the American elections". Trump lamented that years of American "foolishness and stupidity", and now Robert Mueller's probe, have insulted our friends in Moscow.

Putin arrived for his summit with US President Donald Trump.

In the CBS News interview, Trump declined to discuss his goals for the summit - "I'll let you know after the meeting", he said - but said he believes such sessions are beneficial.

"They're paying and they're paying more rapidly and I think North Atlantic Treaty Organisation has never been stronger than it is today", said Trump referring to defense spending commitments tied to a minimum percentage of the gross domestic product of the alliance's member states.

The whole world is awaiting the landmark summit between the U.S. and Russian leaders, which is scheduled for Monday on the final leg of Trump's European tour.

McCain responded by tweeting out a link to a full statement, which called the meeting "a tragic mistake".

The Russian Foreign Ministry rejected last week's indictment as part of a "shameful comedy" they claim has been staged to prevent the normalization of Russia-U.S. ties.

But Monday's session was condemned in advance by members of Congress from both parties after the USA indictment last week of 12 Russian military intelligence officers accused of hacking Democrats in the 2016 election to help Trump's presidential campaign.

Putin said the talks were "open and business-like" and said, "I think we can call it a success".

"I was quite willing to comment on the press conference - something along the lines of, "could have been a lot worse" - until we got to the end", Hayden said.

Then shortly before his meeting with Putin began on Monday, Trump sent a tweet pinning the hostile relationship between the US and Russian Federation on "many years of USA foolishness and stupidity and now, the Rigged Witch Hunt!"

"I think it's a good start, a very good start for everybody", he said when asked how the meeting went, according to CBS News.

Finland's president will host the Trumps and then hold bilateral talk with Putin. -Russian rapprochement or decisions about Europe made "over the heads of Europeans". Trump said Washington and Moscow also wanted to help the Syrian people on a humanitarian basis.

Trump also praised Putin for holding the World Cup, which ended Sunday.

Ahead of his meeting in Britain, Trump criticized Prime Minister Theresa May's approach to negotiations about Britain leaving the European Union and suggested it could impact a proposed trade deal between London and Washington.
