An 11-year-old girl was allegedly raped by at least 20 men for several months at an apartment complex in Chennai's Purasawalkam, according to reports.

The police have arrested 22 people, including the building's security guard, elevator operators and plumbers.

Seventeen men arrested for allegedly repeatedly raping an 11-year-old girl with a hearing disorder in Chennai were beaten up by lawyers when produced at a court in the city on Tuesday, The News Minute reported. The Madras high court lawyers association has also decided not to represent any accused in the case.

The men allegedly sedated the child with injections, spiked soft drinks, and a powder that they made her sniff, before raping her and taking videos of the act.

17 men were taken into police custody.

The police told that Ravi Kumar, the 66-year-old elevator operator would initially sexually assault her in the nearly unoccupied 300-flat apartment complex.

Despite this, more than 100 cases of rape are reported in India every day, according to recent data from the National Crime Records Bureau. "Subsequently, the sister informed the parents who lodged a complaint with the police", said a police officer.

The mother of the victim, a Class 7 student, registered a complaint with the police on Monday alleging that her daughter was sexually assaulted by the men in various places inside their apartment campus.

The perpetrators blackmailed the girl into silence for seven months with the threat of releasing the videos and resorting to violence.

Meanwhile, DMK working president MK Stalin demanded the strongest punishment for the accused and said government assistance should be provided to the family of the minor girl.

"A few days later, he brought two other men from outside, who were under the influence of alcohol and drugs, and raped her".

Describing her ordeal, the victim told police that Ravi Kumar, 66, an elevator operator first sexually assaulted her.

After learning about the gruesome assault, girl's parents rushed her to Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital for treatment on Sunday.
