Manchester United's hopes of signing Gareth Bale this summer are set to end in disappointment because the Wales star is set to stay at Real Madrid, according to reports.

After scoring twice in the 2017/18 UEFA Champions League final against Liverpool, the Welshman hinted that he might be ready to leave Real after a frustrating season.

The Welsh global has been hampered by a number of niggling injuries over the past two years and struggled to force his way back in to Zinedine Zidane's starting eleven after returning to full fitness at the turn of the year.

The Welsh winger, who turned 29 yesterday, had prompted fears of his future in Spain; he highlighted a desire for regular football in an interview that followed his two-goal heroics in the Champions League final back in May.

For the first time since joining the club in 2013, Bale has a chance to assert himself as the main man.

Football365 claim Bale will hold talks with new boss Julen Lopetegui this week to discuss his future but with Madrid nearly certain to sign another superstar to replace Cristiano Ronaldo following his move to Juventus, the former Spurs attacker will no doubt be concerned over his role this coming season.

Jose Mourinho has always been an admirer of Bale but with this latest development, United will he advised to look at other targets as we look to mount a consolidated attempt at winning major honours come next season.

Bale's representatives are expected to hold talks with the Real hierarchy later this week but, at this stage, a move to United appears remote.

Can you see the Welshman leaving the LaLiga giants in this window?
