Queen Elizabeth II is not the first monarch Colman has played - the first trailer for Yorgos Lanthimos' new film The Favourite arrived last week, starring Colman as an unravelling Queen Anne in the early 18th Century.

The show's official Twitter account posted a shot of Coleman, dressed in a pale pink suit and set of pearls, with the one-word message "Patience".

Coleman has been next in line for the small screen regal role.

Colman, 44, has taken over the role of the monarch from Claire Foy, who played the Queen in the first two series of the Netflix royal drama.

It was announced a year ago that Colman would be joining the cast for season three, with Helena Bonham Carter set to replace Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret.

The Crown tells the inside story of Queen Elizabeth II's reign and the impact her rise to power had on her family, her government and her people.

Foy, 33, who earned a best actress Golden Globe for her portrayal of the Queen last year, has previously said she will "miss the role terribly".

"I think Claire Foy is an absolute genius, she's an incredibly hard act to follow, I'm basically going to re-watch every episode and copy her!".
