The two men held almost two hours of closed-door talks in the Finnish capital Helsinki on Monday.

Another Republican, Senator John McCain, described Trump's summit with Putin as "a tragic mistake".

Putin said he agrees with Trump that the two countries's armies are working successfully in Syria. He added that he had spent a great deal of time talking to Putin about the accusations of election meddling, but that he had "no reason to believe" that President Putin's government had interfered with the USA presidential campaign in 2016.

"President Obama thought that Crooked Hillary was going to win the election, so when he was informed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation about Russian Meddling, he said it couldn't happen, was no big deal, & did NOTHING about it".

Asked by The Associated Press' Jonathan Lemire during an extraordinary press conference with Trump in Helsinki, Finland, Putin acknowledged the "rumors", before evading the question.

Trump and Putin spent 90 minutes together in private, just days after the USA president was urged to cancel the summit.

He revealed that he had not thought about asking for the extradition of 12 Russians indicted for allegedly meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

Mr Trump would have none of it. Trump also has agreed to sit down with Glor in Washington on Monday after his Helsinki sit-down with Putin. And also for your team itself doing so well, ' he said as he sat with his Russian counterpart at the meeting's start. "This is an attempt to see if we can defuse and take some of the drama, and quite frankly some of the danger, out of the relationship".

"Russia, if you're listening, I hope you're able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing, I think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press", then-candidate Trump said at a July 27, 2016, news conference.
