Real Madrid slap an £80m price-tag on unsettled midfielder Mateo Kovacic, according to a report.

The 24-year-old was again questioned on his future following Croatia's penalty-shootout win over Russian Federation in the quarter-finals of the 2018 World Cup, and he answered "we'll see" to whether he would remain in Madrid.

They will battle 1998 winners France in the final of the 2018 edition of the competition later today at the Luzhniki Stadium.

The Brazil-born Italy worldwide was understood to be Pep Guardiola's chief midfield target and City had already agreed over a deal that would have seen the player move to Manchester.

The Blues new manager Maurizio Sarri influenced Jorginho's switch to the Stamford Bridge after he was touted to join City this summer.

City have only just broken their transfer record with the £60m signing of winger Riyad Mahrez, 27, from Leicester. However, Chelsea have since swooped in to sign the player on a five-year contract.

Gomes is rated as one of the best young players in France at the moment and he is expected to quit the Ligue 1 side to sign a five-year deal with the Premier League supremos this summer.

If it is to be Kovacic, he will cost a staggering £80million, with that being the amount Real Madrid are reported to have quoted Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola has failed to formalize an agreement with Napoli for the Italian worldwide playmaker amid reports Chelsea could hijack the deal.
