Trump's visit was not a state visit, and other sources at Buckingham Palace and Downing Street told the Times that the plan had always been for Trump to meet exclusively with the queen, and denied the report that the refusal to meet with Trump was an intentional rebuke.

When deciding which royals to include in the meeting, senior courtiers shared concerns about Charles and William's reluctance to be involved, a source told the Times.

'They simply refused to attend.

Melania ditched her usual glamorous style, perhaps aware that the Queen does not approve of revealing clothing, for a more demure look as she donned a sophisticated cream jacket and matching pencil skirt for the royal occasion.

Prince Charles is seen more often with the Queen recently since Prince Philip, 97, has retired from royal duties.

Trump and Queen Elizabeth were scheduled to meet at the beginning of his presidential term, however a petition in 2017 succeeded in blocking it.

It appears the Queen herself wasn't too thrilled to meet Trump, with a Whitehall official involved in making the arrangements for Trump's visit reportedly adding that his time with the Queen was "kept to the bare minimum".

Trump's royal tour paled in comparison to when his predecessor, Barack Obama visited Windsor Castle. The other was a 72-year-old businessman-turned-reality-TV-star-turned-president who was known for causing turbulence wherever he went.

It is understood that Prince Charles was reluctant to meet President Trump due to their diverging views on climate change, for which Charles is a passionate advocate and Trump a long-time cynic.

Following the president's visit, the Twittersphere exploded with the various ways in which Trump insulted Her Majesty, including keeping her waiting for their meeting and walking ahead of her. However, the trip has been marred by anti-Trump demonstrations, as people took to the streets in London and the Scottish capital of Edinburgh to protest the president's visit.
