Northern cancel 170 services across the region

"It is, however, inevitable that many services will be cancelled".

The company says it may have to cancel services across Greater Manchester, Yorkshire, Lancashire and Merseyside because it can not persuade crews to operate the trains.

"Our operational teams are now working on a plan to make the best use of those staff who are available and to run as many services as possible".

The World Cup final takes place on Sunday afternoon, though England will not feature after they lost their semi-final to Croatia earlier in the week.

According to workers' contracts, drivers and staff do not have to work Sundays if they give enough notice.

Other operators including Southern, Thameslink, Virgin, and the now-nationalised East Coast line said services would be unaffected.

After months of controversy over delays and cancellations, the GTR chief executive, Charles Horton, said he would resign.

Managing director Mark Hopwood said: "We will have managers and volunteers throughout our network to help at stations and on board, but, unfortunately, we will not be able to deliver our planned timetable of services".
