He failed to add to his tally in England's next three games - the 2-0 quarter-final win over Sweden, the 2-1 semi-final loss to Croatia nor the 2-0 third-place play-off defeat by Belgium.

England striker Harry Kane is in a commanding position to finish the 2018 World Cup as top scorer, with only the final left to be played.

The thing is, according to some fans at least, Kane's status as the tournament's top scorer is undermined by the manner in which he scored his goals.

Twitter, as ever, is a sounding board for some of the Internet's more unusual comments and it didn't disappoint today.

The Tottenham Hotspur marksman scored six times in Russian Federation, two ahead of a five-man chasing pack come the end of Sunday's final between France and Croatia.

Belgium's Romelu Lukaku had four goals and one assist, and Russia's Denis Cheryshev, Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo and France's Kylian Mbappe also scored four goals, but did not create any others. The striker tied fellow Englishman Gary Lineker's 1986 record, becoming only the second Three Lions player to lead a World Cup in scoring.

"It shows we had a good group stage and scored a lot of goals", he told ITV after Saturday's match.

"Sometimes it goes for you, sometimes it doesn't".
