Australia's Finch sets Surrey record with T20 ton

But it might have been a different story for the Australia Twenty20 captain had he not been dropped on just one by Sussex paceman Jofra Archer.

Archer is a fine fielder, particularly off his own bowling, so it was a shock when he dropped a gentle return catch after Finch pushed forward uncertainly to the first ball of the second over. Somehow Archer failed to hold on to the simplest of chances and Finch was soon making Sussex pay.

Surrey registered their first win of the T20 Blast 2018, thanks to the 222 runs they put on the board after opting to bat first on a flat Oval pitch.

But Coles was hit twice for six by Finch in his second over and the final powerplay over, the sixth of the innings, cost Porter 20 runs as Foakes clubbed a six and three fours - the first a attractive, authentic off drive just past the bowler's left hand - to take Surrey to 67 for two.

Finch, who made 114 not out against the same county previous year, spared no bowlers and hit world ranked No. 1 T20 bowler Rashid Khan for two fours and two sixes.

Coles, brought on for the third over, struck immediately when Burns pulled his first ball straight to deep mid wicket, slowing Surrey for a short while, and Maddinson had made only 3 when the left-hander was tucked up by Porter and could only mishit an attempted lofted drive to mid off.

It was spectacular entertainment for a sell-out crowd of 6,200 but the Sussex response was tame in comparison.

Salt was eventually yorked by Pillans for a career-best 74 from 47 balls with eight fours and two sixes while Pillans, who took 3 for 20, was the pick of the Surrey attack.

"And I didn't think our bowlers adapted quickly enough to the wicket which did a bit for the seamers". Aaron Finch scored 58 off 33 balls opening the innings.

Surrey's Essex-born all-rounder Rikki Clarke, 36, added: "We played some decent cricket in our first two games but didn't quite get over the line".

"Credit to Ollie Pope at the end too".

"It was nice to put in a match-winning performance and help us to another good win after beating Essex last night".

"Our bowlers did an outstanding job".

"But tonight was an excellent performance, with Aaron Finch and Ben Foakes getting us into a good early position to push on".
