De Blasio charged the letter was an attempt by the Trump administration to deflect criticism of the separation policy, which has since been altered.

As mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio has frequently shown a blatant disregard for U.S. immigration laws, but he may have taken it a step too far by illegally crossing the U.S. -Mexico border on foot, according to The Associated Press.

A Border Patrol agent saw the group and asked them if they had anyone from Border Patrol or public affairs there to authorize their presence, and according to the letter, a New York Police Department inspector indicated they did not.

"The mayor crossed the border with the direct approval and under the supervision of the border patrol supervisor at this port of entry", Eric Phillips, de Blasio's spokesman, told the AP on Tuesday.

"Threats by the Trump Administration will not stop me from speaking out and they won't stop my fellow mayors from speaking out, and they won't stop every day New Yorkers and Americans from speaking out", de Blasio said.

The letter, addressed to New York Police Department Commissioner James O'Neill, said a uniformed border official noticed the group taking photos of the holding facility from the Rio Grande River flood plain - south of the United States point of entry in Tornillo, Texas.

The agent reportedly asked the group if anyone from Border Patrol was there to authorise the visit and asked how they had arrived.

The New York Police Department provides the security detail for de Blasio.

De Blasio said border agents approved the crossing after his security detail asked to venture into Mexico so the mayor and other elected officials could get a different view of facility holding youths.

It cited claims by an agent that the group ignored his orders to stay put after he had told them of the violation, according to the Associated Press.

Border Patrol agents who were rescuing a distressed pregnant woman in Texas on Saturday were attacked by rocks thrown by illegal immigrants, officials said.

Spokesman Eric Phillips rejected the claim that Mr de Blasio violated Mexican and USA immigration laws. However, CBP alleges de Blasio's group left and went back into Mexico. How on earth are we not allowed to see what's happening to these children? "ICE is broken, it's divisive and it should be abolished", the mayor tweeted last month.

A spokesman for the Border Protection had no comment.
