With the 2018 FIFA World Cup in full swing, it can be say to forget that the Premier League is barely a month away and Manchester United's stars have reported for day one of pre-season training on Wednesday.

Yahoo add that United, who tried to sign Alderweireld before the World Cup in Russian Federation this summer, have received encouragement an agreement can be reached before this season.

Of course, there are plenty of Red Devils players still in contention at Russian Federation too.

However, Croatia's inspiring display ended 'it's coming home' chants and Mourinho feels there's reason for optimism despite falling short.

Academy players Tahith Chong, RoShaun Williams, Ethan Hamilton and Joshua Bohui could also make the plane after they were spotted training with the first team recently.

Talks are scheduled for the coming days when the World Cup finishes.

Spurs have the likes of Davinson Sanchez and Eric Dier already in the squad to compensate from a potential Alderweireld exit, which begs the question of what Tottenham should do if they are left with £60million burning in their back pocket.

Mourinho has hailed the United target, Mandzukic after Croatia's 2-1 win against England, claiming the striker proved his worth when it mattered.

The Red Devils held talks with Spurs over the Belgian at the end of last season but United were put off by Tottenham's £75million.
