They were playing on Court No. 1 - Federer's first match away from Centre Court since the same stage of the tournament in 2015.

From that point on, he found himself in a dogfight.

The setting was not the only thing alien to the defending champion.

Update: Federer not only dropped his first set, but his second as well.

Anderson, meanwhile, is coming off a four-set win over Gael Monfils that saw three of those sets go to a tiebreaker.

Anderson had lost all previous meetings with Federer and will face either Milos Raonic or John Isner in the last four, looking to extend what's already been his best run at SW19 to date.

Roger Federer thinks a scheduling clash between the World Cup and Wimbledon is football's issue, and not something tennis should be worrying about. But that turned out to be the least of his worries.

Federer over-hit a backhand and when his opponent courteously returned the ball, the eight-time Wimbledon champion elected to display his cricket skills, with a punched forward defence, which didn't go unnoticed by Wimbledon's social media accounts.

The two traded winning the first 22 games in the fifth set, before Anderson broke Federer's serve and took a 12-11 lead in a match that exceeded four hours.

Federer seemed rattled and his forehand began to look vulnerable and it was that stroke which allowed Anderson a decisive break of serve at 3-3 in the fourth.

The final set lasted 90 minutes, and it was captivating stuff. Federer eked out a break point at 4-3, Anderson quickly snuffed it out, then Anderson served to stay in the match, and did so to love.

With England still in contention to reach the final in Moscow, it has been suggested the football tournament could prove a significant distraction as fans at Wimbledon try to keep up with events in the Russian capital.

"Obviously I'm very ecstatic to get through that match", 32-year-old Anderson said.

"I scraped through the third and fourth sets and by the end I thought I did a great job. Making the semis, beating Roger Federer is something special, something I will remember", Anderson said.

"I kept telling myself to keep believing". You'll need to log-in to a cable provider to watch this way, but if you don't have that, you can still sign up for one of the above options and then use your Hulu or Sling TV credentials to sign in and watch on the ESPN digital platforms. He won the Australian Open for the sixth time earlier this year.

When Nishikori then bounced his own racket against the court in the fourth set without being given a warning, Djokovic yelled out "double standards" toward the umpire's chair - drawing boos from the Centre Court crowd. "I couldn't really get the rallies going the way I wanted to, especially the 1-2 punch wasn't working at all today. I really do. I think with the performances I've had, I deserve to be in the semifinals", said Djokovic, whose last major title came at the 2016 French Open.
