Solicitor General Robert Buckland said: "She talked about Corbyn, she talked about the alternative which is delivering the country to the sort of government that I don't think people have voted for and certainly any Conservative voter would be repelled by".

He followed in the footsteps of David Davis, who announced his resignation late on Sunday night.

The consultation process for these undertakings closed last week and as expected to be made public in the next few days, before Johnson's departure led to the government shake-up.

Matt Hancock MP was appointed digital, culture, media and sport secretary in January 2018 having been a junior minister in the department since July 2016.

In a scathing resignation letter, Mr Johnson - who led the official Leave campaign in the European Union referendum - said the dream of the Brexiteers was "dying, suffocated by needless self-doubt" and that Mrs May's plan would reduce the United Kingdom to the "status of a colony".

Brexit minister Steve Baker also left the Government, while Chris Green quit his position as an unpaid parliamentary aide at the Department for Transport.

Attorney General Jeremy Wright is the new culture secretary, with backbencher Geoffrey Cox replacing him as attorney general.

She added with a hint of irony: "In the two years since the referendum, we have had a spirited national debate, with robust views echoing around the cabinet table as they have on breakfast tables up and down the country".

Mr Hancock had worked in his family business, which developed the software that brings up users' addresses when they input their postcode.

"The world is looking at us as a country wondering what type of country we're going to be in a post-Brexit world".
