For nearly five years, Niantic has invited mobile gamers to enter the augmented reality world of Ingress, and take sides as two factions vie for control of humanity's future.

The Animation is coming to Netflix this fall, with Neon Genesis: Impacts director Yuhei Sakuragi set to oversee the series, and Neon Genesis Evangelion art director Takeshi Honda lined up for character designs.

Niantic's 2015 AR smartphone game, Ingress, is getting an official anime series.

"The anime peers into the Ingress universe and allows viewers to see a part of that universe that is uniquely expressed", Niantic founder, John Hanke, told Variety. Late past year the studio announced it was working on Ingress Prime, which will serve as both a sequel and revamp of the original, and feature improvements from Pokemon Go. Ingress will follow two new characters named Sarah and Makoto after they are affected by the "exotic matter" that lies at the heart of the game. "That's going to build to the launch of the Ingress Prime universe". It's a fresh story, but the series and the game will share close connections, including its new antagonist.

Ingress Prime is a game that Ingress players have already known about for some time, a sequel to the first game with signups for more information that are now live. The trailer above was also released for the game back in December to announce its upcoming release.

"[Ingress'] story has continued uninterrupted since launch", Hanke said. "We want to make that smoother for Ingress Prime".
