Lawmakers also expressed concerns about reports that Pruitt used EPA aides to set up meetings about getting his wife a job, which could violate laws that prohibit using a federal position for personal financial gain.

A different EPA inspector general review involves Pruitt's travel practices, suggesting that it will review Pruitt's use of his round-the-clock security detail, which travels with him even when off-duty on family vacations.

Despite his scandal-ridden tenure, his resignation came as a surprise to many in Washington because just a day prior to the announcement, Pruitt celebrated the July 4th holiday at the White House.

US President Donald Trump said Mr Pruitt had done "an outstanding job, and I will always be thankful to him". Pruitt, who gave every appearance of being in the pocket of industry, spent large portions of his time denying the existence of climate change.

The mounting allegations have drawn bipartisan disapproval, with Republicans and Democrats voicing their concerns. Pruitt set up a legal defense fund as he grappled with multiple investigations into his time at EPA.

And at an April hearing of his committee, Pallone called the administrator "unfit to hold public office and undeserving of the public trust". Frank Pallone, D-NJ, told him.

Pruitt's defenders were focused on something else entirely. "Much of what has been targeted at me or my team has been half-truths or stories that have been so twisted they do not resemble reality". James Inhofe have been struck by the brazenness of some of the indiscretions. His staff reportedly searched for private jet options for Pruitt's official travel, and he also stayed at a condo owned by the wife of an energy lobbyist but paid only $50 per night.

He was also there for the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, which raised taxes on oil and gas producers in the US.

That comes after months of embarrassing scandals rolling out about the Trump cabinet member, which ranged from outrageous to outright weird.

That Pruitt has lasted this long is likely attributable to his approach to running the EPA, which many Republicans like Putnam said was unnecessarily burdensome to business under Obama.

Mr Pruitt, a close ally of the fossil fuel industry, also was known for questioning the human role in global climate change.

On his state website, Pruitt described himself as "a leading advocate against the EPA's activist agenda".

He was confirmed by the Senate on February 17, 2017, on a 52-46 vote, the most recorded "no" votes of any EPA administrator.

Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik, of NY, said it's "time for new leadership at the EPA" after the resignation.
