Michelle Booker-Hickstold a local Fox affiliate that she was paying for a tank of gas at the Shell station near Camp Wisdom Road around 10 p.m. when she saw a man get into her SUV with her 2- and 4-year-old sons still in the backseat.

Booker-Hicks noticed what was happening and quickly entered the backseat of her auto and told Wright to stop.

Police say she grabbed her gun and shot the carjacker in the face when he refused to stop, causing him to crash.

Police say the vehicle crashed into a telephone poll, but neither the woman nor her kids were injured.

Booker-Hicks went on to say that she only fired one shot, but that she would have shot the man repeatedly to protect her family.

"I'm not a killer but I do believe in defending what's mine", she told KTVT.

While Michelle Booker-Hicks was paying for her gas, she saw a man get into her vehicle with her two-year-old and four-year-old sons. Wright has been charged with two counts of unlawful restraint and unauthorized use of motor vehicle.

After the incident, police identified the suspect as Ricky Wright.

In an interview with Dallas television station KDFW, Michelle Booker-Hicks said she fired only one shot but she nearly wished she would have emptied the whole clip.

Lafayette Police say they are on the scene of a suspected homicide at an apartment complex on the 1500 block of Louisiana Ave.

Though Booker-Hicks said she initially intended only to fire a warning shot, she did not appear too upset with the result. "My main objective is to get my kids safe", she said.
