Portugal are in a good shape to reach the knockout stages after Ronaldo's four goals gave them a draw and an win in their opening two games and Petit said that if Argentina are to join them, Messi needs to "wake up".

Argentina star Lionel Messi celebrated his 31st birthday in training with the national team squad, and he was beaming throughout the session despite their perilous position in Group D.

When Moscow confectioners found out Lionel Messi would be celebrating his birthday during the World Cup, they decided he needed a gift that measured up - a life-size chocolate sculpture in his likeness.

That's according to France legend Emmanuel Petit who has slammed the diminutive forward. The scene worsened after Argentina in their next match lost the game 0-3 against Croatia.

He told Paddy Power: "To see Messi walking with his head down, he should be ashamed".

"He feels it, he feels that more people are expecting much more from him than what's required at Barcelona".

According to a report in Reuters, Lionel Messi's structure will also be showcased in Bronnitsy, a city located about 50 kilometres from Moscow that is Argentina's base during the month-long Federation Internationale de Football Association 2018 tournament. He's no Ronaldo in that regard. Messi is one of the best players ever, but he needs to show that mentality. When things go well with Barcelona he's a terrific player. He's not concerned about the ball.

For all his criticisms though, Simeone admitted that he still believes his country will progress: "What is happening with the national team is the same that has been happening for the last four years".
