"And I think the suspect had ties to that ring".

According to NBCS Boston, MLB has no comment on the report.

Ramirez is "being eyed" in connection with an ongoing federal and state investigation, according to NY Daily News.

"Obviously, I know absolutely nothing about sports or Hanley Ramirez's stats, but what I do know is crime", McPhee said.

"There has been some reports about a FaceTime phone call that was made between a man during a auto stop".

According to McPhee, a recent stop by police discovered "a significant amount of drugs" in the suspect's auto. "And that vehicle stop coordinated with the timing of his release from the Red Sox", McPhee said, according to the Boston Herald.

McPhee reported that the suspect who was pulled over - a person who was not Ramirez - was found with "435 grams of fentanyl as well as a large amount of crack cocaine". He said the Sox had never been contacted by law enforcement, and maintained Ramirez was released for "strictly baseball reasons".

The Red Sox reiterated on Friday, in the wake of a report linking Hanley Ramirez to a possible criminal investigation, that it was a baseball-related decision when they designated the veteran slugger for assignment last month.

Ramirez, 34, remains a free agent after his time in Boston was cut short in his fourth season with the team.

"The organization didn't know about this", said Red Sox Manager Alex Cora after the team's 14-10 win Friday over the Miami Marlins.

Hanley Ramirez sent shockwaves through the baseball community Friday.

"I hope it's not true", Cora said.
