French far-right leader Marine Le Pen, who in the past has praised Mr Trump's policy of curbing immigration, told French TV that she disagreed with splitting children from parents. I feel very strongly about it.

Meanwhile, Democrats spent Wednesday morning calling on Trump and congressional Republicans to end the policy in speeches on the House floor. Instinctively combative and fond of chaos, Trump usually digs in on controversial policies, rather than backing down.

Prior to Trump's remarks, White House aides refused to comment on rumors of an executive order and Republicans on Capitol Hill seemingly had no knowledge of a coming executive action.

"This executive order would replace one crisis for another". Under a decades-old court settlement, criminal detention centers-or jails-can't be used to hold children.

"The president says we need this approved, so he really likes this policy and we worked with him on making sure that we can change that court decision so kids can be reunited with their families", Scalise, R-La., said.

The policy of processing children separately from their adult accompaniment - if such accompaniment even exists, with many migrant children being sent unattended by their families to attempt the illicit border crossing - is to ensure that the children are cared for properly and not at risk of being assaulted or exploited by "coyotes", or smugglers paid for their services to help spirit children and families across the national border, according to ICE via NPR. It also calls for prioritising immigration cases involving detained families.

The government also plans to open a fourth shelter to house hundreds of young migrant children in Houston, where city leaders denounced the move on Tuesday.

Speaking to members of the press today, President Trump made a brief statement followed by an impromptu Q & A.

One of the people said Nielsen, who had become the face of the administration's policy, had little faith that Congress would act to fix the separation issue and felt compelled to act. If this horror didn't make Republicans politically unpalatable amongst independents, they would certainly continue it unabated.

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, the president and other officials have repeatedly said the only way to end the practice is for Congress to pass new legislation, though both Democrats and some Republicans have said the president could reverse it by himself. "Any Immigration Bill MUST HAVE full funding for the Wall, end Catch & Release, Visa Lottery and Chain, and go to Merit Based Immigration".

At the time Obama faced protests from both sides of the aisle and was accused of encouraging minors to chance the crossing with soft-touch immigration policies.

In recent weeks, some 2,500 children who crossed the U.S. border illegally along with their parents have been separated from them. "And we will have that at the same time we have compassion, we want to keep families together".

You get the sense of their dilemma reading the latest blog post from Tom Donohue, the take-no-prisoners head of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, who writes eloquently of the core values that have assured the success of the American experiment, and American capitalism-values, he says, that surely don't include separating immigrant children from their parents as part of a cynical strategy to win passage of a hard-line anti-immigration bill.

Under a court settlement, the federal government can not hold the children for more than 20 days.
