Melania at the Border

For the start of her trip to visit immigrant children at the US border, the first lady wore a $39 jacket from Zara with the words "I REALLY DON'T CARE, DO U?" written graffiti-style on the back.

First lady Melania Trump on Thursday traveled to Texas to speak to children and officials at a shelter for migrant children.

Mrs Trump's spokesperson said she wanted to see for herself the situation on the border.

More than 2,000 children have been separated from their parents since April, when Mr Trump's attorney general Jeff Sessions instituted a "zero tolerance" policy.

"It's a jacket. There was no hidden message", said spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham.

Mrs. Trump sat alongside Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar at a table at Upbring New Hope Children's Center and heard caregivers explain how the children are well treated.

"I'm looking forward to seeing the children and ask you how I can help these children to reunite with their families as quickly as possible", said Mrs. Trump. "We're all bothered by it". Well, today she didn't have to say much because her outfit said it all.

Fashion is political for the first lady. "She wants to see what's happening for herself and she wants to lend her support".

Mrs. Trump went further, saying she "hates" to see families separated at the border.

Trump acknowledged Wednesday that the mother of his 12-year-old son, Barron, had been prodding him.

"My wife feels very strongly about it", he told reporters after he signed the order. Her four former living predecessors, seemingly encouraged after Laura Bush authored a scathing opinion piece, followed with sharper commentary of their own condemning the family separations as shameful.

The jacket worn while the first lady was getting on the plane is sold by Zara and retails for $39.
