Kate Spade's "heartbroken" father died just a day before the U.S. fashion designer's funeral on Thursday, the family has confirmed. While the whole world was mourning the loss, it seems Spade's Earl F. Brosnahan, Jr. (Frank) sadly passed away a day before the memorial.

Kate Spade's father had been ill and also heartbroken over her daughter's death. He was surrounded by family when he passed, TMZ is reporting.

Spade was found dead in her Manhattan apartment on June 5 in what would later be determined as a death by suicide.

An obituary notice published on Monday shared that Spade will be laid to rest on Thursday in her hometown of Kansas City, Missouri, with a mass of Christian burial held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Redemptorist Catholic Church.

Earlier this month, Brosnahan said he talked to Spade the night before she died.

Her company, Kate Spade New York, has announced plans to donate $1 million to support suicide prevention and mental health awareness causes in tribute to Spade.

Her funeral took place on 21 June in Kansas, and her family have kindly requested people make donations to ASPCA or to Wayside Waifs instead of sending flowers.

Spade was one of the biggest names in American fashion, known especially for her sleek handbags.

Coach, now known as Tapestry, bought the Kate Spade brand past year for US$2.4 billion ($3.25b).

The family released a statement on Thursday to Good Morning America, which said he was "heartbroken over the recent death of his beloved daughter".

Born and raised in Kansas City, Brosnahan took over his family business, Midwest Heavy Construction Association, in the 1960s.

Following speculation, it was later confirmed that the renowned fashion genius - who leaves behind husband of 24 years, Andy Spade, and their 13-year-old daughter Frances Beatrix - died from suicide.

The Kansas local believed his daughter would have been gratified to know the discourse surrounding her death had potential to help someone else. He said they were not legally separated and never discussed divorce.
