"The best strategies to limit mosquitoes start at the larval stage", Waterloo researcher Brad Fedy said.

Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito & Vector Control District announced Wednesday that two new birds and 10 mosquito samples tested positive for West Nile Virus.

"While most people infected with West Nile Virus show no symptoms of the illness and pass it on their own, even healthy people have become severely ill for weeks when infected", says Dr.

Additional information about West Nile virus can be found on the IDPH website.

West Nile can also be spread to animals like birds and horses.

According to the department of health, while there were 90 human cases, those are unreported. The virus was also detected a year ago in four horses in the Kootenay area, confirming the virus is present there as well.

People are also asked to report sick, dying or dead birds to health leaders to see if they can be tested for West Nile. People over the age of 60 or those with weaker immune systems have a higher risk for developing issues.

IH said there are things everyone can do both at home and while travelling to reduce the risk of infection.

The agency said it will increase its surveillance of both counties because of the increase in virus activity.

As residents spend more time outdoors and near the water this summer, using insecticides with DEET are necessary whenever residents are outside.

Remove any standing water in pots, containers, pool covers, tires, wheelbarrows, wading pools, roof gutters and other containers that hold water.

Buy products with Bti (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis)-a naturally-occurring bacteria that kills mosquito larvae but is safe for people, pets and plants-for stagnant pools of water in the lawn and garden.
