Bernthal's character was killed off at the end of TWD season one. He also now stars in the Marvel-Netflix series "The Punisher", a role he originated in Season 2 of "Daredevil".

After the actor was spotted with fellow castmates Andrew Lincoln and Norman Reedus, TVLine has confirmed that Jon Bernthal will be returning to The Walking Dead next season to reprise his role as Shane Walsh.

It's already been announced that Andrew Lincoln, whose Rick Grimes character has been at the core of "The Walking Dead" since it started, is leaving in Season 9.

We don't cover The Walking Dead much here at BMD because, real talk, we all stopped watching it years ago.

Circumstances around Shane's return are kept under wraps.

Indeed, there's some speculation as to how Bernthal's beloved character might return to The Walking Dead.

Also no word yet on which cast members will attend this year, but the network has a habit of pulling out all the stops for The Walking Dead at Comic-Con for fans.

Bernthal's return to the series is probably not a coincidence, considering that Season 9 will feature the departure of series lead, and Shane's one-time best friend, Rick Grimes. So any excuse to get him back, if only for a flashback or two - Bernthal is otherwise occupied starring in the Netflix series, "The Punisher", among other projects - sounds like just the shot of life "The Walking Dead" needs.
