Roger Stone On Revelations He Met With Russian: 'I Just Didn't Remember'

The letters obtained by The Associated Press and written by Stone and Caputo's lawyers say that, in late May 2016, Caputo received a call from his Russian business partner introducing him to Greenberg, who claimed he had information about Clinton that he wanted to share with the campaign.

While Caputo claims that his private investigation reveals that Greenberg is a longtime FBI informant, The Post wrote that there "is no evidence that Greenberg was working with the FBI in his interactions with Stone".

Rudy Giuliani said he was unaware of the previously undisclosed meeting and doubts Trump would have been informed of the sit-down that reportedly amounted to no exchange of information.

If Roger Stone and Michael Caputo told investigators what they said publicly, they could have real problems.

Stone and Caputo, who did not previously disclose the meeting to congressional investigators, now say they believe they were the targets of a setup by US law enforcement officials hostile to Trump.

"I can't imagine anything got back to the then-presidential candidate (Donald Trump) that was of any substance if (Stone) had concluded it was a waste of time", Giuliani said Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union".

Greenberg, who claimed in 2015 he'd spent 17 years as an FBI informant, said he was not working with the bureau when he met with Stone.

"So, yes, sure, there was contact, as there was in that meeting".

"In multiple respects now, the testimony of Roger Stone appears inaccurate or deliberately misleading". He pressed Republicans on the committee to make the interview transcripts available to Mueller's team "for a determination whether any witnesses committed perjury before our committee".

Schiff said he had similar concerns about Caputo's testimony, which he said also omitted mention of this interaction with a Russian national offering dirt on Clinton, something Schiff said could not plausibly have escaped his recollection. "Nobody ever spoke to me about what you know how Russian Federation might help", Caputo said.

Special counsel Robert Mueller is now investigating the meeting, Caputo told the Post.

"They knew more than I did, which set off alarms. I thought - was this a setup?" he recalled.

They were ultimately unable to come to an agreement because Greenberg was demanding too much money, Stone said.

Stone and Manafort in the 1970s started a political consulting firm together, as The Post has also reported, which specialized in representing dictators such as the Philippines Ferdinand Marcos, and other notorious human rights violators including African guerilla warlord Jonas Savimbi.

Greenberg, who has also used the name Henry Oknyansky, claimed in an immigration court filing in 2015 he had provided information to the Federal Bureau of Investigation for 17 years.

Caputo served on the Trump campaign from November 2015 until June 2016 working out of Trump headquarters in NY. Campaigns are approached constantly by people trying to sell dirt.
